Wood chopping action from last year’s Arapohue Show

The popular wood chopping events make it back into the Arapohue Show again this year.

The sport was re-introduced last year after several years of absence, and show organiser, Carolyn Hutchings, hopes top axeman Jason Wynward will be competing.

“Last year this combination won the best run chop in Northland. They will be cutting pine this year, and Puhoi Chop Club will also be attending.”

The Northern Wairoa A & P Show, to give it its full title, will be held on Saturday, February 13, at the Arapohue Showground in Mititai Road.

“Many farmers have been effected by recent drought conditions and this makes it hard to keep animals looking their best for showing. But the dairy cattle will still be there and judging is from 9.30am onwards.

“In horse arena there will be a lot of different classes competing, hack, intermediate and junior ponies will be in the main arena along with miniature ponies; there will be a golden horse, Welsh ponies and lead rein section.

“More excitement awaits in the four-wheel drive competitions, with a course up the back of the show grounds where drivers will endeavour to show off their driving skills.”

“Other activities will include shearing and farm show presenter Greg Clarke with his very entertaining Sheep-n-Show.

“Stan Stillman as Body of Art, a statue that comes alive will be back, along with a variety of trade sites scattered around the grounds.”

Entry fees are $7.50 per adult and $2.00 for 5-15 year-olds. Under fives and parking are free.
