September is National Alzheimer’s Awareness month and to raise awareness and reduce stigma, Alzheimers Northland has events planned for Kaipara.
From Tuesday to Friday, September 19-22, donation boxes and a raffle sale will be outside Countdown Dargaville.
On Thursday, September 21, a luncheon at 12 will be followed by the film ‘Still Alice’ at 1pm at the ANZAC Theatre in Dargaville. Tickets are $20 from the Shoe Box and the Dargaville Sewing Centre.
On Saturday, September 23, there’s a ‘memory walk’ in Dargaville. Starting at 10.30am at Countdown, the walk goes through the gardens and town, finishing at the band rotunda on Victoria Street, at approximately 11am.
A sausage sizzle and entertainment from Circus Kumarani, Dargaville Ukuleles, Kola Band and dancers and the Dargaville Town Band will then take place at the rotunda.
“The theme for the walk is ‘fun’, as with alzheimer’s you have to have a sense of humour and for people with alzheimer’s, their sense of humour is the one thing they retain,” said Alzheimers New Zealand, Dargaville community advisor Vivienne Hollis.
There will also be a hat competition at the walk — with awards for the funniest hat, most colourful hat and most original. People of all ages are welcome.
In Maungaturoto on Friday, September 22, raffle tickets and lunch will be sold outside RD1. Donation boxes will also e available. For more information go to alzheimers.org.nz/memorywalk or call 0800 004 001.
