An instrument of inspiration
by Andy Bryenton
Accordionist and acclaimed performer Kevin Friedrich presents a very special instrument to Ross Newlove, president of the Northern Wairoa Maori, Maritime and Pioneer Museum. The ornately finished accordion is a gift from the Christchurch Accordion Orchestra, representing the spirit of resilience of their city in rebuilding after two devastating earthquakes.
After recent tragic events, the accordion’s message of triumph over adversity takes on a new and poignant meaning. It joins a vast collection of such instruments on display in Dargaville, ranging from the antique to the modern, many of which are in fully functional condition. Kevin’s recent concert put the collection in the spotlight, as he returned to Dargaville for the 12th time, in what has become a highly anticipated annual musical event.
