Diana Flynn provides living proof that birthdays are mandatory, but growing old is optional

Fitness feats of inspiration

by Andy Bryenton

When the top-ranked, most accomplished CrossFit athletes on earth came together to test their mettle in Madison, Wisconsin last month, one of our Kaipara locals not only took on the world but attained fourth place equal on points in a highly competitive field for her division.

Farmer, Wellsford Gasfitting Ltd co-owner and athlete Diana Flynn says that there’s a choice to be made as we grow older.

‘Do you want to rust out or wear out’ is the question she asked herself when embarking on the path of fitness and self-realisation. At the age of 60, Diana is doing the opposite of many folks, who choose to slow down. Instead, she’s expanded on her goals and even coaches other like-minded over-55s classes at Fit365 Mangawhai as well as younger members.

The world-class CrossFit competitor started lifting weights in Dargaville, training at Brian’s Gym and gaining both national and Oceania awards in powerlifting.

CrossFit may be different, but builds on the foundations learned with Brian’s tutelage those years ago.

The contest in Madison, situated in ‘America’s Dairyland’ was a fine example, as temperatures and humidity soared and athletes resorted to ice baths after each challenging event.

As more of us live longer, the challenge, as Diana relates it, is to put more life in our years.

Diana thanks “an amazing support group from her ‘familia’ at Fit 365 Mangawhai who helped fundraise to get me to the games. Also, an equally supportive partner and family who I daresay think their mum and grandmother is truly inspirational.”
