A consolidation of civic bylaws is a chance to have your say on details of local governance

Have your say on bylaws

by Andy Bryenton

The Kaipara District Council is tidying up the local rules, which govern health, safety and environmental concerns, and would appreciate input from locals as a new Consolidated General Bylaw system is proposed.

While a bylaw restructure is often used to strike down old laws dating from colonial times, this move by the KDC is all about modernity. The proposed updates include removing five parts that are now obsolete, simplifying the way the bylaw is written to make it clearer, and making some significant proposed changes to the Cemeteries and Crematoria and Solid Waste sections.

The proposed Solid Waste Bylaw was changed to better reflect legislation and council’s Waste Management Minimisation Plan, and for Cemeteries and Crematoria the way we manage cemeteries is more transparent, and a few technical aspects have been clarified.

Council is keen to hear about those parts of the bylaw that interest or impact on the community and to let them know what people think of the proposed changes. Feedback could list other matters that might need to be included to ensure they are relevant for the district into the future.

Details on the proposed changes can be found at kaipara.govt.nz/haveyoursay. Hard copies will be available at KDC offices and libraries after they reopen to the public.

If you would like to know more but don’t have internet access, contact Kaipara District Council on 0800 727 059 and request a copy of the proposed bylaws. Submissions are open from May 11 to June 19 2020 and can be completed through the website, over the phone with the council or by hard copy or email.
