Leading with experience
by Brian McEwing
Marion and I were both born in Te Kopuru, attended local schools, married 44 years ago in Dargaville and have made the west coast and Dargaville our home for the majority of my 66 years.
My background has been farming, earthmoving, logging, sawmilling and currently working for an agricultural contractor. I serve as pastor at the Lighthouse (Presbyterian) Church, chairperson for the Kaipara Budgeting Service, and together with Marion for 25 years have owned the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre.
I stood for mayor in the Kaipara by-election and polled the highest out of Dargaville and West Coast candidates. While campaigning for mayor we were asked, if unsuccessful would you consider standing as a councillor in the next election. Here I am. I bring eight years of previous council experience, along with a practical common-sense attitude.
A councillor is a public servant, listening to and making decisions that provide the best possible outcomes for all the uniquely diverse communities in the Kaipara. One shoe does not fit all. Consultation and transparency are paramount.
Pride and passion for Dargaville must be nurtured. When I was last on council, we saw the construction of the swimming pool, the cinema, the skate park was in progress, and since then the sports complex. These happened with passionate people working with council. Council needs to love our volunteers.
Council’s fundamental role is to administer the service contracts.
Supervision and refining of these contracts are critical. Our district plan was supposed to be enabling with less red tape to encourage economic development, but it has become full of hurdles and expense. It needs sorting out.
Let me help. Vote #1 for Brian McEwing.
