Matariki rises and shines
by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville’s inaugural Matariki festival, held on Saturday, July 6, was a cultural and community event enjoyed by enthusiastic crowds. Cold, bright winter weather heralded an afternoon of food, fun and family time for those who gathered by the town’s band rotunda to enjoy live music, kapa haka performances and perhaps one of the sought after mussel fritter sandwiches, which were served up piping hot from the barbecue. The revelry went on into the night as this new event on the Dargaville calendar observed the return of the Matariki star cluster, significant in Maori cosmology as an oracle of the coming season and the bringer of new life.
