Northtec students, staff and leaders took part in a traditional blessing before the official opening of the tertiary institute’s new campus in Dargaville

New horizons for Northtec

by Andy Bryenton

Tertiary trades-based education in Dargaville got a boost last week as Northtec celebrated the opening of their new, revitalised campus.

Moving from their interim Mangawhare premises to the refurbished Northtec campus in Parore Street, staff lauded the upgrades, which have seen the mothballed site transformed and ready to accept a new intake of students.

With high demand from the trades sector, there are good prospects for learners. Tutors and past alumni alike confirmed that every one of 2019’s intake for the painting level four course is now in paid employment.

A senior kaumatua of Ngati Whatua completed the blessing of the buildings, consecrating them to the use of furthering young people’s success.

Members of Northtec’s governing body were pleased to offer a wider range of education options to students in Dargaville. A group of students who completed last year’s level four course in painting were there to encourage new enrolments as the new site opened for business.
