Kaipara people affected by cancer in some way are invited to participate in regular monthly get-togethers for informal support and to share their experiences with each other.
The meetings are supported by cancer support nurse specialist, Maggie Prentice, who will travel from Whangarei to Mangawhai Heads and Maungaturoto alongside her colleague, May Pivac, based in Dargaville.
Office and volunteer coordinator at the Cancer Society Whangarei branch, Annette Davies, said that living in rural areas can be very isolating so this provides an opportunity for people to share their experiences if they choose.
“Some people want to share their story, and some don’t, but everyone enjoys the company and a cuppa.”
The Mangawhai group will meet at the St John Ambulance building, 194 Molesworth Drive, every third Tuesday of the month, from 10am until 11am.
The Maungaturoto group will meet at the Footprints room behind Holy Trinity Church, 134 Hurndall Street East, every fourth Tuesday of the month, from 10am until 11am.
Dargaville people meet at the conference room in the Community Health Centre at the hospital, every second Wednesday of the month, at 9.45am.
