Giving winter warmth

The Wellsford area now has a Give a Kid a Blanket drop-off point to gather warmth for disadvantaged families.

The initiative was conceived and led by artists Donna Turtle Sarten and Bernie Harfleet, who with help from the community collect blankets and deliver them and other warm items to children through public health nurses, social and family support workers. The project is in it’s third winter and has collected over 4,000 blankets previously.

“With what seems to be an even harder winter coming for many kids, with families in New Zealand facing the winter cold in cars, garages, sleepouts and damp cold housing, we hope to be able to help more families keep warm this winter,” they say.

As part of this year’s project, a photographic exhibition of images taken over the last two years will be exhibited at the HUM Salon in Grafton, Auckland as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography.

The collection finishes on Sunday, July 23, with 50 drop off points already in place.

Go to the Give a Kid a Blanket facebook page for information about the drop off point.
