Petition to ban plastic

The paper petition has attracted 650 signatures while online it has attracted another 1,559 supporters from all over the world

A petition to ban single-use plastic bags has been presented to the Kaipara District Council in a bid for Kaipara to lead the way as plastic free.

The petition attracted over 2,000 signatures from supporters in Kaipara, and on line.

“I thought I should do something as Love Kaipara educator and as a councillor. Originally it was an idea for Northland, then I thought it would be good to have Kaipara leading the way to change behaviour so I put the petition out there,” said Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock.

The council will now send the petition on to the Ministry for the Environment.

“I think that this petition has been invaluable and will be a signal to government that many people feel strongly about this issue,” says Victoria. “There are compostable alternatives that can be used that are plant based materials.

“I urge retailers that have the power in this situation to consider a shift to the alternative bags so consumers have a choice.”

Kaipara local Margaret Baker co-led the petition alongside Victoria.
