Dargaville boy Jimmy Lawrence, 17, has been selected for the International Va’a Federation (IVF) World Sprint 2018 Championships in Tahiti.
Jimmy belongs to the Hikuwai o Kaipara Waka Ama team based in Dargaville and trains almost every day on the Northern Wairoa.
His mother, Carmen Lawrence, says Jimmy has been paddling since he was eight and won his first medal when he was 12 at the New Zealand National Sprints, held annually at Lake Karapiro.
“Since then he has filled in for other teams, but over the last six to seven months he’s decided to take it seriously and competed in the most recent nationals, with the aim of being selected for the worlds,” said Carmen.
He will travel to the worlds with J19 team Karearea under Ngati Rehia Te Tii as Kaipara does not have a team for this age category to date.
This team was formed four months before the New Zealand National Sprints and is made up of paddlers from all over the country.
The family have until July to raise $3,640 to get Jimmy to Tahiti and cover his living costs for the duration of the event.
