Encouraging care

Participants get ready to take part in the inaugural Pouto Lighthouse Challenge

More than 20 people, ranging in age from seven to 70, took part in the inaugural Pouto Lighthouse Challenge multi-sport event which aimed to encourage people to care for the environment and raise awareness for the Cancer Society.

“This event was a success in many ways, from bringing awareness of cancer and acknowledging those who have passed, opening our marae up for others to experiencing a marae stay, community involvement and support, high energy and participation, amazing sponsors, acknowledging our Pouto Lighthouse and the hope that others will look after and protect its environment so future generations can enjoy it, by taking the walk up and leaving your 4WD at the bottom,” said co-organiser Joesephine Nathan.

“We would like to thank key sponsors and volunteers: NorthSouth Multi Media, Carters Dargaville, Te Ha Oranga, Te Papa Atawhai Kauri Coast Seaweek, Sport Northland, Pouto Topu A Trust, Cancer Society Northland, Nolas, Countdown, Waikaretu Marae Committee and all of our amazing whanau and volunteers.”
