Riders hoof it home

The successful team: Lydia Carey on Little Romeo, Ruby Carey on TC Pianoman, Katie Griggs on TC Texas Tea, and Amber Ryder on TC Baylys Boy

The Dargaville High School equestrian team has ridden its way to fifth placing at the Northland Secondary Schools Combined event held on Thursday, April 5 at Kaikohe Showgrounds.

The team of four girls rode ponies owned by team manager Jae Carey, who is also mother of two of the team members.

One of the girls, Amber Ryder, has been involved with the riding team for three years in a grooming role, but this year rode a borrowed pony, and achieved the  best overall score of the team.
Rider Ruby Carey achieved fifth placing in her dressage, and this was the first time she had coached the team.

“It was exciting to have a student coach the team, as well as ride, and she really stepped up to the plate,” said team manager, Jae Carey.

Eighteen teams took part in the competition.
