Mini-tornado strikes

Te Kopuru Volunteer Fire Brigade attended a call-out to a house, which lost its roof during a mini-tornado last night

A mini-tornado tore the roof off a house last night and has left a number of properties without power in Te Kopuru.

The Te Kopuru Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the call-out just after 9pm.

“We secured the rest of the roof and covered up his furniture in the part of the house that had no roof in case it rained,” a Te Kopuru Fire Brigade spokesperson said.

Northpower public affairs manager, Steve Macmillan, said roofing iron from a garage appeared to have hit the 400 volt and 11,000 volt power lines at Te Maire Road, south of Cole Road, causing the lines to clash.

“The high voltage — 11,000 volt lines — are now restored and lines crews are currently working on issues around the low voltage — 400 volt lines.”

There are 23 customers currently without power, but it is expected power will be back on later this afternoon as Northpower have sent additional crews over to help.
