New Zealand punk rock legend Jed Town of the X Features and the newly-formed Kaipara-based group Swamp Brothers will perform alongside other New Zealand artists at two upcoming fundraising concerts to oppose the proposed Tegel chicken farm.
Swamp Brothers debuted at a fundraising concert held at the Tokatoka Tavern earlier this year for the same cause, and the event raised $1,250 towards hearing costs and expert fees.
Tegel has requested consent to build a chicken farm, which would have the capacity to stock up to 1.3 million chickens and employ 32 people on land near Arapohue.
“Kaipara is such a beautiful place, and the farm would put a bad omen on the place. If there was a Tegel chicken farm there, it would ruin it,” says Jed.
Sistamatik, Nga Manu, The Goldilocks Zone and The Ghoulies will also perform. Songs from each band will be recorded later for a fundraising album.
“We urge you to come along and show your support,” says Jed. “All these bands are playing their beautiful music in support of a clean, green New Zealand. There is no place for ruthless greed in our world — the scale sets a new precedent for factory farming.”
Tickets will be $10 with a koha box for extra support. Gigs will be held at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club on September 14 and at Tahi Bar in Wellsford on September 15 — with bands playing from 7–11pm.
