Steals on wheels

A Whakapirau family were grateful to local lads for recovering their stolen bike

Thanks to the vigilance of two Dargaville lads a Whakapirau family was able to continue its summer camping trip to Kai Iwi Lakes with all of their property.

While stopped for shopping at the supermarket the family left their two laden vehicles, one with a trailer and the other with their four bikes on the rack, unattended. When they returned, one bike was missing.

Seeing something amiss, young rider Codie Preston offered to investigate while the family telephoned police and checked for security footage. He and friend, Kayden Wilson, rode off in opposite directions communicating with each other on walkie talkie radios.

Ten minutes later Codie returned to report he found a man loading a bike matching the description into his van after reportedly finding it in the bushes beside the car park and was taking it to the police station. Codie informed him that he thought it might be stolen and asked the man to follow him to the Countdown car park for identification.

Owner of the bike, Niki Le Mesurier, was grateful the boys were on the spot at the right time. “If they had not been so helpful and gone looking, we would have lost the bike, taking us a long time to replace it. These boys didn’t have to help us, but they did. My family are truly grateful to Codie and Kayden.”
