Nominations due for local elections
by Paul Campbell
Nominations for the Kaipara District Council, Northland District Health Board and the Northland Regional Council in the triennial elections for local government open on Friday, July 19 and remain open for a month, closing at noon on Friday, August 16.
“With nominations opening, it’s a good time to have a think about what makes a good elected member,“ says KDC’s general manager, governance, strategy and democracy, Jason Marris.
“Attending one of our five candidate evenings across the district is a good way to learn more about the role, the expectations of an elected member and the process around going for it,” he adds.
“The pre-election report for Kaipara is available on our website, and at council offices and offers a great way to better understand the current position of Kaipara, our work and what we have planned for the next couple of years.
Nomination papers will be available from council offices at 42 Hokianga Road, Dargaville, and Unit 6, The Hub, 6 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai, by accessing kaipara.govt.nz; or telephoning the electoral office on 0800 922 822.
To be eligible to stand for election, a candidate must be a New Zealand citizen by birth or naturalisation ceremony, enrolled as a parliamentary elector anywhere in New Zealand and nominated by two electors in the area a candidate is standing for.
For comprehensive information on these elections go to kaipara.govt.nz.
The single transferable voting (STV) electoral system will be used for the KDC and the Northland District Health Board. For the NRC the first past the post (FPP) electoral system will be used.
