On the beaten track

Mountain bike enthusiasts have a new Kaipara adventure trail to ride this summer, with the opening of the Paparoa Mountain Bike Track, in the hinterland of the settlement’s showgrounds area.

Last weekend it was busy with riders testing the one-kilometre route through established bush after a group of locals completed forming the track during the past few months, employing a mechanical digger, and plain hard work with picks and spades.

“You’ll find the track, which is signposted beyond the sports pavilion at the showgrounds,” says organiser Stu Robinson. “It’s ready to go, but we’re planning further improvements and expect to hold an official opening ceremony in February. Our main objective with the track is to encourage young riders to get out and have a go, and that is already proving the case, so that’s excellent.”

Stu adds that the not-so-young can also enjoy the new facility.

“We don’t expect it to attract riders from Auckland and places, as it is just a kilometre, but it’s great for locals.”
