Northern Districts Team Roping Club held a family orientated fun weekend at the Paparoa showgrounds. This trio of young riders Alize Brown on Buttercup, Zeyon Smith on Maverick and April Fletcher on Lulu were lined up and ‘rearing’ to go when Lifestyler called in.

Roping Club member 12-year-old April Fletcher will be heading off to Gympie, Australia to compete in an international barrel racing competition against competitors from the USA, Australia and Canada.

“It will be a cool trip and I’m really excited. It will teach me a lot, even if I don’t win; it’s the experience,” she said.

Riders of all ages came from as far north as Morewa and south from Otorohanga to take part in the weekend activities, which included barrel racing, team roping and social time.

Club spokesman Steven Allen said the club was wanting to encourage families and younger people to come and join up. He said many of those who were club members had started out as novices and were now gaining confidence in their riding and roping skills.

The club meets each weekend at the Paparoa showgrounds.
