Stars come out for Matariki

Students from Selwyn Park School kapa haka group entertained the public as part of Dargaville’s Matariki festival on Saturday, July 6. The mid-winter rising of the Matariki star cluster, Pleaides, marks the Maori New Year and regarded as an omen of the coming season and it’s brightness an indication of the harvest to come. The event was a success on many levels, with the performance by the young Selwyn Park group attracting both comment and crowds. With food, crafts, song, dance and activities all on display, the community gathering illustrates the growing significance of Matariki as an annual observance.
