Tinopai contest a ‘20-20’ success

“What a day — the 20th anniversary of the Tinopai Fishing Contest for the year 2020 was a red-letter day for everyone,” said local school principal, Sonia Kaihe, at the close of a huge day for the harbourside community last Saturday.

“The best day this principal has had since arriving here in 2013. The awhi, the generosity, the kindness of the whole Tinopai community and Kaipara District has been phenomenal this year, with guest appearances from Willow-Jean Prime MP and Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith giving out our top fishing prizes.

“Amazing sunshine, excellent atmosphere, incredible generosity, great music, tonnes of fish, big crowd out the front and the back of the stage.

Sponsorship generosity this year has blown us away. We ended up giving 106 spot prizes away, 40 kids’ spot prizes; 10 fishing rods with boogie boards for top sprats in the children’s contest with a Playstation 4 as the top prize. Also on the day’s list were fish auctions, barbecues, mussel fritters and the best hangi in the Kaipara,” said Sonia.

As a school fundraiser, the contest coffers were bulging after the event, with a full total still being assessed at time of print.
