Winter Wonderland is a free event in the same spirit as this year’s Play in the Park day or December’s forthcoming Silver Fern Farms Whanau Day

Wonderland at winter’s end

by Andy Bryenton

A large group of like-minded community organisations have joined forces to bring some free fun family time to the kids and parents of Dargaville this September.

Calling themselves the Kaipara Tamariki Collective, they include groups at the forefront of providing services for families, and they are building on the success of their previous family fun days to present a Winter Wonderland on September 22.

The collective has grown out of conversations and collaboration between Te Ha Oranga, Whanau Focus, the Early Years Hub, Oranga Tamaki, the Kaipara District Council, Circus Kumarani, the ANZAC Theatre, Silver Fern Farms and Sport Northland. That’s a big roll-call of community-involved groups working for a common cause. Following the success of events such as this year’s Play in the Park day, the collective decided to organise a fun fest not dependant on the changeable early spring weather.

That’s why the bouncy castles, games, circus skills, clowns, balloon animals, face painting, music, funny photo booth, free movies and free food and drinks will all be wrapped up indoors at the Dargaville Town Hall from 10.30am. In fact, it’s not just the sausages Silver Fern Farms are putting on the grill that is free of charge.

Thanks to this unprecedented collaboration between groups, the entire event is free to attend. Bring the whole family and get off the couch; there’s a ‘winter wonderland’ theme to celebrate the end of winter.
